90th Anniversary of Athlone Executions Marked

Republican Sinn Féin laid wreathes at the Athlone Brigade memorial, Custume Place and at the grave of Thomas Hughes, Cornamagh Cemetery, Athlone, on Sunday January 20th last.

They were marking the 90th anniversary to that day of the execution by the Free State Army in Athlone Barracks of Thomas Hughes, AthoneMichael Walsh, Herbert Collins, Stephen Joyce and Martin Burke all from Galway in 1923.

Both wreathes were laid by the Seán Costello / Martin Hurson Cumann of Republican Sinn Féin Athlone.  The wreathes laid at the Athlone Brigade memorial named all five IRA Volunteers executed and the wreathe in Cornamagh Cemetery on the grave of Thomas Hughes was laid on behalf of the leadership of the republican movement.
